My Top 10 Favourite Transformers: Age of the Primes Figures

If there's any time where it feels incredible to be a Transformers fan and collector, it's this time. With the fantastic War for Cybertron Trilogy toyline that paved the way for high-quality figures going forward and the awesome Legacy toyline that gave us a multiverse of TF figures to collect, this very next toyline really felt like an impossible dream that's now a wonderful reality. I am of course talking about the Age of the Primes toyline.

Ever since the Aligned Continuity began back in 2010, the concept of 13 Primes was introduced into Transformers lore and the backstory of the franchise has never been the same since. For a time, we could only imagine what it would be like to have toys of all 13 Primes. Well...now we do.

OK, I don't actually have all 13 Primes in this picture as I don't plan to get the Titan Class Star Optimus Prime and so I have Legacy Nova Prime as a fill-in. Plus, that's the Legacy Vector Prime in the picture, not the Age of the Primes figure, but the point still stands. Thanks to this toyline, we can now have all 13 Primes from Prima Prime all the way to Megatronus Prime. That's crazy! Transformers fans could only dream of such a thing, but now we dream no more! It's been so great collecting all the Primes and seeing how they're brought to life in toy form and what unique transformations they have. But it's not just about the 13 Primes. This toyline continues the multiverse theme and has seen a few fan favourite characters get toys for the first time in years, if not decades.

And that's what this post is all about. I'm here to count down my Top 10 Favourite Age of the Primes figures. Whether they be a Prime or any other character, any and all Age of the Primes figures are fair game for this list. So without further ado, let's dive in to the legend of the 13 Primes and uncover my favourite toys from this toyline...

Number 10: Solus Prime

Gotta start the list with a Prime, haven't we?

Solus Prime was the earliest Prime to be released in this toyline, being a part of the Wave 1 Deluxe figures. I think she was even THE first Prime released in the Age of the Primes line I got, and what a strong first impression she set for the Primes. This Solus Prime figure is based on her appearance in the Transformers: Titans Return and Power of the Primes web shows, and that was a good source to draw inspiration from. She looks very majestic ad powerful with her purple and gold colour scheme that gives her a somewhat regal look to her, which is fitting for she's one of the 13 Primes. She's well-detailed and the figure is depicted so it's easy to tell she's the female Prime of the group. She's incredibly well articulated and can be displayed in a variety of different poses. But of course, the highlight of the figure is her legendary artefact, the Forge. It is SO fun posing her waving that thing around like she's going to smash someone's face in, let me tell you! I do find it rather daft that you have to take the hammer head off in order to fit it into her hands, but what are you gonna do? She still looks great whether she's holding it in one hand or both and the most fun displays to make with her are whenever she's holding her iconic hammer. I imagine many collectors will display her like she's about to, well, forge something with her Forge. What's really handy is that she can carry it on her back in robot mode, so you won't have to leave it to the side.

Solus Prime was never depicted with a vehicle mode in any media beforehand, so this toy is our first time seeing her with a vehicle mode. In this case, it's some kind of armoured mini-truck. I think it's a good mode for her. It looks appropriately tough and robust, which is fitting for the blacksmith of the Primes, and it also looks somewhat slick in appearance, suggesting she's much faster than she seems. You can also store the Forge on her in vehicle mode, so once again you don't have to leave it off to the side, which is always handy.

Solus Prime is a great figure that's so fun to display and a great way to start my collection of the 13 Primes. She certainly forged herself one awesome toy...

Number 9: Amalgamous Prime

It was a running joke in the TF fandom that this guy would be impossible to make into a toy. Well, now the joke's on the fandom, because Hasbro made an Amalgamous Prime toy, and it's fantastic!

I love the downright bizarre, alien design that this guy has. He just looks so weird compared to the other Primes, that it gives this figure a lot of character and it befits his nature as the eccentric shapeshifter. This is the Prime who invented transformation, and the T-Cog, after all, so why not go all out with his design and make him look unconventional like so? His Shockwave-esque head and the four arms are the big standouts for me and the four arms are especially fun to pose around as you can get all kinds of expressions and wacky poses with them. You could even have him pull off General Grievous and wield four swords if you have any spare sword accessories for him to hold. But of course, Amalgamous' actual accessories include his trademark scythe weapon and the T-Cog, which stores in his head behind his eye of all places. There's an amber coloured piece at the bottom of his scythe that bears resemblance to the T-Cog how it appeared in Transformers: Prime, so we technically have two T-Cogs with this guy. How fun is that?

Speaking of fun, the alt-mode is where this guy's play value really shines. He does have a definitive alt-mode with this walking tank you see here. Once again, really taking advantage of this guy's wacky design by giving him an equally wacky vehicle mode. Hasbro must've been having so much fun designing this toy, I swear. But Amalgamous hasn't got just one mode...

His body parts can detach and form mini-vehicles themselves, and there's quite a few you can get from a mini-jet to a mini-train to a mini-tank and more. And due to the nature of this toy, it's possible to make up your own transformations for him too! An Amalgamous Prime toy should have multiple transformation possibilities after all, and Hasbro really nailed it I think.

I'd be crazy NOT to include this guy on the list! He's such a unique Transformers toy, he's a uniquely designed Prime and he has plenty of play value with his many different transformations. This is a toy fit for a Prime, if I do say so myself...

Number 8: Prime Smokescreen

Last year, I included this guy on my list of favourite Autobots, so don't be surprised that a toy based on this version of Smokescreen made the list.

Starting with the Legacy toyline, we've been getting toys based on Transformers characters from all over the franchise, Prime especially. I have a few of them myself, such as Legacy Bulkhead, Dreadwing, Skyquake, Knockout and Breakdown, and Age of the Primes gave us a new toy based on the Prime version of Smokescreen. And boy did they do this guy justice! Not only is this toy an upgrade from the actual toy based on his Prime counterpart from Prime's own toyline, but it's a great figure in its own right. It's a great mixture of the G1 and Prime aesthetic and keeps true to Smokescreen's appearance in the show, including his iconic white, blue and red colours, door wings on the back and slick body proportions. He's very articulated and his large feet make him quite stable in many different poses. I even like how the toes can move up so you can put him in more dynamic poses. As a nod to the Prime aesthetic, his hands can slide away and you can place a pair of guns in their place, much like how the Transformers in Prime mostly had arm cannons. The cannon accessories can store on the door wings on his back for safe-keeping.

And if you REALLY want a neat bit of fan-service, the toy actually has the Phase Shifter sculpted on his left wrist! I would've preferred it if it was an actual accessory that attaches to his wrist rather than being sculpted directly onto it so that I can play with the toy without the Phase Shifter, but I guess it might've been too hard to pull off. Still, it's so neat they did that.

And of course, he transforms into his iconic sports car that he turned into in the show. It looks as slick, speedy and awesome as it did in the series and includes all the right details, especially the large 38 on the doors and chequerboard patterns. I can easily say among the Age of the Primes toys, this'll be one of my favourites to display in vehicle mode because it's such an awesome car. And in this form, the cannon accessories can store around the back, so it looks like he has large thrusters to make him go even faster.

Smokescreen's new toy is a true delight and a shining gem in my collection. Hasbro really gave him a great upgrade that puts his original toy to shame and it's such a delight to have a brand new figure of my favourite incarnation of Smokescreen. I wonder if he'll assume it was destiny that got him on the list...

Number 7: Armada Red Alert

This toy appeals to me from a nostalgic perspective since I was one of those kids who grew up watching Transformers: Armada back in the day, so once I saw Age of the Primes was making a new toy based on the Armada version of Red Alert, it was an instant purchase for me. I NEVER got any of Red Alert's toys from back in the day, not even the recolours, so this felt like achieving a childhood desire as now I finally have a toy based on Armada Red Alert. And it was worth the long wait.

Design wise, the toy is a perfect replica of the character's appearance from Armada. From the large chest to the Robocop-esque head to his white and blue colours and especially his iconic red laser hand that gives me Shockwave vibes, this couldn't have been a more spot-on sculpt of Armada Red Alert if they tried. One interesting feature is that his laser left hand can be exchanged for another one that has a different design, so you have two different laser hands you can display him with. Like most modern Transformers toys, he's also very articulated and he displays brilliantly due to how tight his elbow and knee joints are. His large feet and heels also make him very stable too. Naturally, I have a lot of fun displaying him alongside the Legacy Hot Shot and Optimus Prime figures. It does feel great to have the Armada Autobot trio together at last. This toy doesn't come with any Mini-Cons, but there is another version of the toy that depicts Red Alert in his orange deco that does come with Mini-Cons, so maybe get that one if you want Mini-Cons as well. He does however come with a gun accessory that's store in his back, which references the gun he'd use whenever his Mini-Con partner combined with him in the show, and one fun feature is that it can be held in his hand, or displayed on his shoulder like a shoulder cannon. It also has a claw accessory that can be removed for storage purposes in vehicle mode, so you can make it look as if he's shooting it at the enemy.

The vehicle mode is another homerun from Hasbro. This is a spot-on replica of his medical SUV mode from the show and is really fun to roll around due to the big wheels he has. The vehicle looks appropriately robust and like it can handle any terrain and it feels very solid and compact.

The toy is so damn good that I had to get it again when they rereleased it as the Decepticon Flatline, and the toy looks equally as awesome as Flatline. I probably would've put Flatline on the list if it wasn't for the fact the nostalgia factor is in Red Alert's favour.

This toy is brilliant from top-to-bottom and I'm so glad to finally own a figure of this version of Red Alert. Accurate to the show, well articulated, stable in both modes and full of play features, Armada fans will not be disappointed with this figure at all...

Number 6: Robots in Disguise 2001 Sky Byte

Much like Armada Red Alert, I knew I had to get this toy the moment it was announced. Since Robots in Disguise 2001 was my first ever Transformers series I watched and was the series that started the franchise for me, I'm naturally going to gravitate towards any toy there is based on the characters from that series, and Sky-Byte is no exception.

This figure is a fantastic new toy of the much beloved Predacon. Design wise, it captures Sky-Byte's appearance from the show to a tee from his blue, grey and gold colours to his large four-pronged left hand and the large fin on his head. He even has his large shoulder pads, which are hinged so they don't get in the way of articulation and make transformation easier since they can move. The sculpting is very detailed, accurately capturing how Sky-Byte had a lot of mechanical details on him everywhere in either robot or shark mode, the face-sculpt is absolutely spot-on and he's very posable too. I especially love to pose him lunging at his opponents with that large left hand of his, and he has no trouble standing due to his sturdy feet and ankle joints.

But the highlight for me is his iconic cybershark mode. Oh my gosh, that shark mode! Hasbro really outdid themselves with this one. Not only is the cybershark a very accurate recreation of how it looked in the show, but the transformation is very clever in how it's able to make Sky-Bytes feet form the lower jaw, and it's surprisingly articulated too! The tail moves side-to-side, the fins swivel, the mouth opens and the head can even move up and down! That's pretty nuts and it's so clever how the designers were able to pull it off.

Sky-Byte's a huge fan-favourite, so he deserved a toy that did him justice and this one delivers in spades. It's an accurate recreation of how he looked in the show, it has a fun transformation, it's well-articulated, it looks great in both modes and his cybershark mode is surprisingly well articulated too. Sky-Byte, care to finish this segment off with a song?

Sky-Byte: "Sure thing Media Man! Who's the bestest shark around? Who's got the bestest toy in town? Sky-Byte, that's me! Who deserves the best toy crown? Who has a toy that doesn't let fans down? Sky-Byte, that's ME!"

Number 5: Beast Wars Quickstrike

Quickstrike was a pretty nothing character when it came to Beast Wars, but we can easily agree he had some pretty awesome toys, and this new one that Age of the Primes gave him is no exception!

Of all the characters in Beast Wars, Quickstrike has one of the best, most striking and fun designs around, so I knew I had to get this toy when they announced it, and I did. He was a birthday present for me earlier this year, and what a present he was. Much like all the other multiverse figures, this toy captures Quickstrike's appearance from Beast Wars perfectly from his striking colour scheme to the head sculpt to his bizarre scorpion-leg left hand and cobra head right hand. It really feels like Quickstrike leapt right out of the show and into real life with how accurately this toy captures his design. He has a lot of articulation, especially with the cobra head. Every segment of the cobra head is ball-jointed, so you can pose it in multiple different ways. What's especially fun is the cobra head has a peg in its mouth so you can attach blast effect pieces in there and make it look as if Quickstrike's shooting fire out of the cobra's mouth or something. Given what a crazy rootin, tootin' shootin' desperado this guy was, I could easily see him gleefully setting things on fire if he had such an ability...

Like with Sky-Byte, the beast mode is the star of the show with this toy. As a Fuzor, Quickstrike turns into a hybrid creature of a scorpion and a cobra. I still love the genius design here where the scorpion's the main body and the scorpion tail is replaced with a cobra. It's such a perfect hybrid creature design and so fitting for a Predacon! He's equally as fun to play around with and pose in this form, especially with the cobra tail, though it would be nice if the pincers could swivel at the wrists. Still, he looks fantastic and I love playing with him in this form.

Quickstrike got one of the best new toys of the Beast Wars cast in my opinion. Brilliantly sculpted, greatly articulated, a fantastic recreation of his appearance in the show and fun to play with in both modes, Quickstrike more than earned his spot on the list...and good had nothin' to do with it!

Number 4: Onyx Prime

Another Prime makes the list, and I think many collectors will be happy to see this guy here. Onyx Prime has routinely been hailed as one of the best, most unique figures of the line, and I'm inclined to agree.

Onyx Prime is notable as being not just a member of the 13 Primes, but also the first Beastformer, so his design naturally incorporates a lot of bestial elements in to it. His head looks like he's wearing some kind of beast-themed helmet, he has wings on his back and he has large ox-like legs and feet. I love how the design looks a little techno-organic with the body looking mostly metal, but some areas like the top of the wings and his feet are sculpted with fur to add more of an animalistic edge to the character. The predominantly brown colour scheme also adds to the character's beast-themed nature as brown as a colour heavily associated with nature and many animals in the wild are brown, but they didn't make Onyx look dull by any means. He still looks visually striking despite his mostly brown colours due to the use of grey, gold and black to vary him up a bit. His primary accessory is his artefact, the Triptych mask that is depicted as a spearhead for this toy. I can't tell you how much fun I've had displaying him wielding that spear as if he's fighting with it, preparing to throw it at the enemy or even display him as if he's about to fire a bow and arrow. He comes with another accessory that forms a tail in beast mode and can unfold into an archery bow so he can be posed as if he's performing archery, which is all kinds of awesome.

As the only member of the Primes without a vehicle mode, Onyx instead has a beast form. He can turn into this huge, cyber dragon creature that has wings that can move up and down and an opening mouth. He can either be displayed like this or as a six-legged beast since he has some extra limbs that unfold from the sides. I personally prefer to display him like this since it looks less cluttered to me.

But for many people, this is the toy's shining feature, its third centaur-like mode. I prefer Onyx in his robot mode, but the centaur mode's still a nice touch and I like how the transformation is handled when getting it into this form.

Onyx Prime is a great figure for any collector, even if you're not aiming to collect all the Primes. He looks visually unique, his centaur mode is like nothing ever seen in Transformers before, he's fun to display with the various ways he can wield his weapons and he just looks awesome. It's no wonder collectors went wild for the original beast-former...

Number 3: Armada Sideways

Legacy Tidal Wave is my favourite modern Transformers toy that's based on a character from Transformers Armada. If I had to name my favourite Armada-based toy from Age of the Primes, it would hands down be this guy.

For years I've long wanted an actual toy of Armada Sideways since he's one of my favourite Transformers characters PERIOD, so you better believe I was over the moon when they released this figure. And needless to say, it was well worth the wait! This figure puts the original Sideways toy to shame due to being more show-accurate, better proportioned and, most importantly, actually having proper articulation. The original toy was more or less a brick with no waist, elbow or knee articulation, but this figure has no such problems. He's very well articulated, especially in the areas the original toy lacked, and his flat feet make it easy for him to stay well balanced when posed. His purple, grey and yellow colours make him look very striking, as well as being very accurate to how he looked in the show. But of course, the main event with this toy is Sideways' iconic head-swapping gimmick. He includes two Mini-Cons, Rook and Crosswise, and there's a symbol on his chest that can be flipped around to display either an Autobot or Deception symbol.

Here he is as an Autobot...

...and here he is as a Decepticon. Naturally, I mostly display him with his Decepticon logo and head since not only was he depicted that way throughout much of the show, but he looks better this way in my eyes. I'm not a fan of the fact Rook and Crosswise have to have some parts removed in order to put them in their head modes, but the pieces can attach to Sideways if you don't want them off to the side like so, which is handy. Speaking of pieces, the laser cannons on his arms can be removed and place in his hands like a pair of batons, which is also cool. I don't remember if he ever did that in the show though...

And of course, Sideways turns into his iconic motorcycle mode. While it does look pretty cool and it's neat his two Mini-Cons can combine together to form the rider just like on the original toy, it looks a little too bulky for me and the rider looks rather small when posed on the bike. I feel the original toy better proportioned the rider in comparison to the bike mode. But hey, everything else about this toy is fantastic, so who am I to complain over something so minor?

I feel my inner childhood screaming with joy thanks to obtaining this figure. It's a terrific toy that does one of my favourite TF characters justice, the head-swapping gimmick is excellently done, he looks just like he did in the show and it's so fun displaying him with either head and scheming as he plays both sides. No matter what side he's on, I know I'm on the side that says Age of the Primes knocked the ball out of the park with this Sideways toy...

Number 2: The Combaticons

The Combaticons are my favourite Combiner team in all of Transformers, so of course I had to get these figures when it was announced we were getting new toys of the Combaticons for Age of the Primes. With Legacy Menasor, Studio Series 86 Devastator and Age of the Primes Superion setting a strong standard for modern combiners, it was only a matter of time we got these guys since they're probably the most iconic Combiner team next to Devastator.

The team consists (from left to right) of Vortex, Brawl, Onslaught, Swindle and Blast-Off, and all five of them are fun to pose and display in a variety of ways. My favourite way to display them is having Onslaught standing there pointing as he gives the order to attack and the Combaticons are running off to attack. All five of them look very accurate to their original G1 designs complete with blocky proportions and the colour schemes they were depicted with in the show. Vortex has my favourite colour scheme of the team with his dark grey and blue colours looking VERY badass and dynamic to me. Blast-Off's brown and purple colours are a close second for me. As for the figures themselves, they're all very posable and look great when displayed. Of the bunch, I think Onslaught and Brawl are the best looking figures with the best looking proportions and the best articulation. Swindle's the weakest to me, but he's still fun in his own right, especially when displayed with that long arm cannon on his shoulder. I also love how these figures aren't compromised by their ability to combine with all five of them looking great in either mode, and unlike SS86 Devastator's components, these guys are able to transform, combine and still have waist rotation. Speaking of transformation...

The vehicle modes are also incredible. Blast-Off and Vortex look slick and aerodynamic and their colour schemes also make their shuttle and helicopter modes look even more striking, Brawl is very solid and robust in tank mode and the turret is actually able to turn, Swindle's fun to roll around in his jeep mode and Onslaught looks especially badass when attached with his trailer assembly that has two cannons on the back for extra firepower. Speaking of firepower, Swindle has a little trailer that can turn into a gun for either Onslaught or their combined form to use. Onslaught's trailer can also form into a battle station for him to man in robot mode, much like how Age of the Primes Silverbolt could with Silverbolt's extra accessory. This is a team of Decepticons that look amazing in either robot or vehicle mode.

But that's not why these figures are on the list. No, the main reason is down to the Combaticon's most iconic feature. Their ability to combine...

...into Bruticus!

Of all the Combiners we've recently gotten, Bruticus is easily the second-best behind SS86 Devastator itself. Unlike Superion and Menasor, Brawl and Swindle feel like they actually form a pair of legs instead of just attaching to the back of the calves, so he looks more like he's made up of five robots compared to those combiners. Brawl and Swindle were also cleverly sculpted with hinges in their mid-sections so in combined form, Bruticus still has ankle movement to allow for more dynamic poses. Like the aforementioned combiners, Age of the Primes Bruticus is VERY solid and stable. Unlike the original Combiner Wars Bruticus, there's no floppy parts or tabs that barely hold together, so he's way more fun to pose and display.

He's also very accurate to his G1 model and looks appropriately large and powerful when in this combined form. I just don't know what else I can say, Hasbro really hit the nail on the head with this combiner! He also has even further play value thanks to the SS86 Shockwave figure being able to attach to his shoulder as some kind of giant shoulder cannon. That's really cool.

The Combaticons were just done so much justice with these toys and I'm so happy to own the whole set so I can display them as a team, or in combined form. A perfect set of toys to make one of Transformers' most iconic combiners...

Now for my Number 1. Originally, I only had one figure taking the top spot, but then another figure came in and I liked that one so much that I decided I'd make it a tie. So...

And my Number 1 Favourite Age of the Primes toys are...Megatronus Prime and Liege Maximo

You're shocked, I can tell. =P Just about EVERY TF collector was singing Megatronus' praises to the point it got a spot in the Transformers Hall of Fame just for being such a solid figure! As for Liege Maximo, like I said I liked his toy so much that rather than picking between these two, I thought I'd make it a tie, hence they're both here.

Megatronus and Liege Maximo make the list for the same reasons: they both have insanely awesome, demonic and badass looking robot modes and look incredible when displayed. Megatronus takes cues from his appearance in the Dreamwave Transformers comics, in which he debuted, from the black and purple colours to the knight-like head design and even the fact he's on fire. Yeah, they actually included flames that you can attach to the figure to make him look ablaze! They didn't have to, but they did anyway, and that's just great! This Megatronus figure truly looks as if it leapt out of the comics and it makes for a fantastic display piece for how badass and eye-catching he looks here.

Liege Maximo also takes cues from his appearance in comics, namely the G2 comics in where he appeared at the end of an issue and the comic got cancelled before he could actually do anything. In any case, it's a spot-on depiction of how he appeared in that comic from the large horns on his head and back, the green colour scheme and how his left hand can be flipped around to reveal an arm cannon. He has details everywhere on him and his demonic looking appearance fit for the most evil of the Primes due to being the deceiver that orchestrated their downfall. The large horns on the back are my favourite aspect of the design, and make him look somewhat Unicron-esque in my opinion. One does have to wonder if the 13 Primes would've ever believed anything Liege Maximo said if he had this design... Oh, and here's an awesome bit of fan-service with this toy. You can actually recreate his iconic pose from the comics by sitting him in the purple throne that comes with SS86 Leader Starscream, and the horns on his back can detach and fit on the back of the throne! No really!

Hasbro really knows how to appeal to their fans, don't they?

Both figures include their own artefacts. Megatronus has the deadly Requiem Blaster, which he has on his right arm and looks appropriately beefy and powerful. He also comes with a spear and machete, which he can dual-wield or combine together to form a large staff that he can hold in either hand or with both hands. I love to display him with the staff especially. Liege Maximo comes with his Liegian Darts, which can be stored in a gun that he can carry in either hand. I love how each dart has its own design, so you could pretend that each one has its own effect when he fires them. Both figures are also very well articulated too with plenty of opportunities for cool poses, and they both stand well on their own thanks to their feet designs. Liege Maximo's large heels especially help with stability.

Their vehicle modes are equally as strong too with Megatronus turning into a really badass looking tank, while Liege Maximo transformers into an alien ship that many have noted bears a resemblance to the alien ships seen in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Intentional? Perhaps. In tank mode, Megatronus rolls well on his wheels, the flames can still attach to him so he looks like a tank on fire now, his weapons can store on the sides on the tank and the turret can turn a full 360 and move up and down, which is always impressive when a tank is able to transform and still have a functional turret. As for the Liege, his space ship form is very solid and I love how the Liegian Darts can be stored at the front, so he can still shoot them in this form. That's so neat.

There's not much else I can say about these toys. They're my favourites among the Age of the Primes toyline for all the reasons I mentioned above. They're by far my favourite of the 13 Primes toys I've collected and my favourites of the entire toyline for having incredible designs that look powerful and threatening, wonderful fan-service with what the designs are based on, great articulation and accessories, unique transformations and solid vehicle modes. If I was only getting some of the Primes instead of all 13, these two would easily be among them. Megatronus Prime and Liege Maximo, my Number 1 Favourite Age of the Primes toys...
