My 10 Favourite Characters (Patreon Request)

Title card

Special thanks goes to RMWriterArtist who's support on my Patreon page got him this post.

A while back, I got paid on Patreon to make a list of 10 characters I didn't like. That wasn't fun. =P Now that same person has paid me on Patreon again in order to do a list of characters I like. This'll be a lot more fun, so thank you. XD He even felt the need to send me a message of apology for it:

“Uh, hey, Media Man? I didn’t realise how angry you’d be with the hated characters list so would you like to do a Favourite Characters list?”

Come on pal, no need to apologize. You paid me to do this, so I can't complain. Still, I'd be happy to do this one. :D

When it comes to media, we all have characters we love. Whether we relate to them, whether we want to be them, whether we're fascinated by them, whether we enjoy rooting for them, characters make or break a story in any media no matter what it is, be it a show or a movie or a book or whatever and we all have characters that make us come back over and over and over again to check out the media again because we just love seeing these characters. This list will be 10 characters I consider my favourites in all of media and I hope you'll enjoy my choices.

For this list, I can't have more than one character per franchise, I have to pick one from each franchise. Also both heroes and villains can make the countdown here, this isn't a list about favourite heroes or villains, this is a list of my favourite characters in general.

So without further ado, let's dive in...

1: Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog

Miles "Tails" Prower

You think my friend The Wandering Fox is the only one around here who loves this guy? Nah, I love Tails too. People can have their Sonics and their Shadows, for me this is the guy that I tune into the Sonic franchise for.

Tails is everything I love in a character. He has an appealing and memorable design, he looks cute, he's very friendly and humble, he's a big help to his friends, he's quite badass in spite of his young age and small size and he's overall just a pleasant guy to be around. It's no wonder Sonic's best friends with this fox. I'll always remember how it was the Sonic X episode "Heads Up, Tails!" where Tails become my favourite character. The moment when he defused the missile and saved Station Square from destruction was so awe-inspiring to me and I was like "Oh yeah, Tails is my favourite" after that. It was so cool to see him overcome his initial doubts and insecurities and become a big hero just like Sonic himself.

Speaking of, that's always been what I find the most admirable about Tails. He's a humble guy who's just happy to help others and more-or-less lets Sonic have all the credit, but he's also willing to stand up and become a big hero in his own right should the time arise. I already mentioned the Station Square missile incident he stopped, but there's also the time where he went through hell and back to stop Shadow from killing Cosmo in "A Cosmic Conspiracy". That was so badass to watch and it really shows how you shouldn't underestimate Tails. When this kid gets serious, he gets SERIOUS! It's a pity the games often forget how brave he can be and he become more cowardly to the point where even Sonic Frontiers pretty much had him acknowledge that he's "inconsistent". Still, even in the games Tails can have his awesome moments, namely in the Adventure games or how he helped Sonic and Knuckles take down Metal Overlord in Sonic Heroes. Hell, he even got his own spin-off games Tails Adventure and Tails Skypatrol where he took down some evil-doers by himself with no help from Sonic or anyone! That alone is an example of how capable and awesome this kid is! And now we have the movies where he's (mostly) done justice and has had his time to shine. While not all incarnations of Tails are the same, they mostly stay true to his core character in that he's a modest guy with a big heart and isn't just the lovable sidekick, but he's also a caring guy who's braver than he seems and arguably as big of a hero as Sonic himself can be. The franchise just wouldn't be complete without him honestly.

Tails is my favourite Sonic character and one of my favourite characters in all of media for the reasons I stated. He's kind, he's humble, he's great with technology, he's a big help to his friends, he's supportive (especially to Cosmo) and he's able to kick major ass even without Sonic's help. He's the best friend a hedgehog could ever ask for...

2: Liko from Pokémon Horizons

ree

I bet you guys are sick of me gushing about how much I love Liko at this point. She's already appeared on two other lists I've made about characters I like, and here she is again. XD All that should do is tell you how much I love this character.

Liko instantly won me over from the very first episode of Pokémon Horizons due to her kind and gentle nature, social awkwardness and appealing character design. I still love how the writers and animators worked hard to give Liko an identity of her own and didn't just make her a female Ash, which in turn made her feel less like his "replacement" and more like the new character of the anime with her own story to tell. That alone helped in making Liko a compelling new protagonist, but then there's how her character development and arc has been handled. While she sadly doesn't have the best track record when it comes to battling (looking at YOU Season 3...), her character and her development is nothing to complain about at least.

Liko is a character I love for how relatable she is. Like her, I can be socially awkward sometimes and not always be able to say what I'm thinking and I can be a pretty anxious guy when new things are happening and all. Oh and both me and Liko love Pokémon too, that's very relatable. XD Her arc has been very compelling and some of the strongest writing to come out of Horizons thus far with how she started off as this shy and anxious girl with no direction in life and now come the time-skip era, she's more willing to speak up for herself, is far less of a doormat, isn't afraid to be blunt when the time is right and especially isn't taking anyone's crap anymore. Need I remind you all that she outright SNAPPED at the Explorers the first time she met them again after a year had passed? Liko from before Season 4 certainly wouldn't have done that! This girl ain't no pushover anymore and I love it! And yet through it all, she still maintains her kind and gentle nature. The most admirable people to me are those who can go through a lot in life and still be nice people. Kindness is the most important trait a person can have after all and Liko proves this. Look how many hearts she's touched and how close the bonds with her Pokémon are. All that is because of what a lovely person she is. Liko is precious and if anyone wants to say anything bad about her, well...they better say their prayers. (glares menacingly) That aside, Liko is just the whole package for me and thus that's why I've given her a spot on this list.

Liko is the reason I keep watching Pokémon Horizons despite how much of a mixed bag it can be at times. With a kind and loving heart, strong character development, a wonderful bond with her friends and Pokémon and a lot of things that make her relatable, this is a girl who is worthy of carrying a Pokéball...

3: Chip N' Dale from the Disney Universe

Chip N' Dale

When it comes to Disney's characters they created themselves, people tend to love either Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck or Goofy. In my case, Chip N' Dale are my favourite characters Disney themselves created.

I've always found these two to be a lot of fun, especially in the old Disney cartoons where they'd often battle Donald Duck and Pluto. Chip N' Dale are duo in where Chip's the more practical and smart leader while Dale is the goofball and their personalities do pave way for a lot of good comedy whether it's Dale's goofy antics or Chip's reactions to Dale's goofiness. The clever ways they'd often outwit their enemies also help in making them fun to watch. The fact they're a pair of cute looking chipmunks also helps in making them appealing, but it's also an example of how you should beware the cute ones. After all, these two tiny chipmunks will humiliate you in multiple ways if you ever get on their bad side, so watch your backs! Now of course, I can understand why some may dislike the duo since there's a lot of times where Chip N' Dale are antagonising people for no good reason and yet they have the gall to get mad whenever people start antagonizing them back, but I feel most of the time the two are justified in their actions so that kind of hypocrisy doesn't bother me too much.

However, there is their own cartoon show Chip N' Dale: Rescue Rangers where they play a more protagonist role and go around solving cases and helping other animals instead of pranking Donald and Pluto, which I imagine is where most of the duo's popularity came from. In CDRR, they're a great duo too with both Chip N' Dale being good-natured heroes who'll do whatever it takes to solve case and bring peace to the animal kingdom. They'll help just about anyone in need, even a herd of elephants despite their huge size compared to them! You have to admit it's pretty cool seeing a pair of chipmunks go up against just about anyone in spite of their sizes. All this and more are why these two appeal to me so much and hence why they make this list.

Oh and before you ask, what do I think to Chip N' Dale from the CDRR movie?

Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers movie

I ain't touching that crap with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole!

Cute, courageous, charmingly mischievous, a lot of fun to watch and big heroes in their own right, Chip N' Dale are a tiny pair that give me a huge amount of enjoyment...

4: Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons

Lisa Simpson

While I hate this show, I still very much like Lisa Simpson...just not the modern, flanderized version of the character we're stuck with these days.

Like with Liko above, Lisa is another character where a large reason why I like her is because I can relate to her. Much like Lisa, I'm a very caring person who values the lives of not just humans, but animals and nature too and I also must regretfully admit that I can also be very opinionated, though thankfully not to the extent of Lisa in later seasons. Also, like Lisa, I have a lot of moments where I can feel like I'm the only smart person in the room and I'm surrounded by idiots, so yeah, she really is very much a person I can relate to. I'd even say she's the character that's the closest to me in terms of personality.

But it's not just that as to why I like Lisa. I admire smart people and Lisa, being the only person in Springfield with a brain, naturally makes her the only character in the show who I don't find incredibly insufferable since she isn't a total idiot (at least when she's written correctly). I admire how smart she can be and people should follow her example when it comes to being better educated and being smarter. Same goes to how she wants to make the world a better place. Anyone who wants to do that is worth admiring in my eyes and the sheer determination she has in order to save the environment and protect animals is pretty impressive. Sadly in later seasons, she can go too far in that regard, but in earlier seasons she was more restrained and could be humbled more easily, hence why I say I prefer Lisa in the earlier seasons as she was more likeable and flawed in a way that didn't make people want to punch her. But overall, Lisa is a character I love for her relatable she is, how determined she can be, how kind and loving she can be towards nature and the environment and also how she's the only person living in Springfield who isn't an insufferable idiot and wants to make the world a better place for everyone.

I may hate The Simpsons, but I can proudly say that Lisa is at least one character I like from the show, and while they may have tarnished her in later years, that won't change the fact I very much still like this brainy little kid. If only the writers would treat her better...

5: Wonder Woman from the DC Universe

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman, AKA Princess Diana of Themyscira, is my favourite superhero of all time, so she naturally has to get a spot on the list too.

If you're curious which version I'm going with, I'm not picking just one particular Wonder Woman. I'm going with Wonder Woman in general, although if I had to pick a favourite, I'd say the DCEU Wonder Woman would probably be it with the DCAU Wonder Woman as a close second. Wonder Woman to me is the complete package: a beautiful woman who can kick ass and take names without breaking a sweat while also being one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Compared to most superheroes, Wonder Woman doesn't have much of a Rogues Gallery because she's often helping redeem her enemies or befriend them in the end, which is pretty admirable of her and also shows that you don't always have to just punch your enemies in the face to defeat them. Sometimes just talking them down and getting them to change for the better is all you need.

She's supremely badass, as mentioned earlier with many of her feats being on par with even the likes of Superman as she's tangled with many powerful enemies, many of which are even mythical creatures and even actual gods! And through it all, she's often emerged victorious with only her strength, powers of flight, her bullet-deflecting bracelets and her golden Lasso of Truth to carry her to victory. She's an Amazon after all and she always shows that when in battle, especially in many of the DC Animated Movies or even the DCEU. Her solo movie and Justice League: The Snyder Cut especially are incredible examples of how strong and powerful she is whether it was handling Darkseid's Female Furies, holding her own against Doomsday as best she could before Superman had to take over, dealing with German soldiers during World War 1, facing the literal God of War himself Ares and being the only one to give Steppenwolf a tough challenge before Superman was resurrected. And of course, there's her kind and compassionate side. One of my favourite examples of this is in the Snyder cut of Justice League where after dealing with terrorists and saving a bunch of school kids, she immediately tends to them and reassures them everything is fine now. Then one asks if they can be like her some day and she gives an uplifting response. Just...aww. ^^ We need a person like Wonder Woman in our world, we really do.

Badass, compassionate, courageous, always willing to do what's right for both her world and Man's World, Wonder Woman is a true wonder for us all and one of the greatest superhero ever. She's a hero I'm always happy to call for help whenever trouble is near...

6: Darth Vader from Star Wars

Darth Vader

This character made it on my 10 Favourite Villains list, and Darth Vader is also my favourite Star Wars character out there, so it only feels right to include him here.

Darth Vader is one of the greatest villains in all of media and he's well earned that reputation. He has a menacing design, a booming deep voice courtesy of the late, great James Earl Jones, he owns the screen every time he appears to the point where even hearing his iconic wheezing is enough to send shivers down our spines and he always spells doom for our heroes whenever he shows up. Need I bring up the infamous hallway scene from Rogue One in which people use that as one of the best examples of Darth Vader at his scariest and most threatening? That scene alone is why Darth Vader has his menacing reputation. And then there's the fact in the Jedi: Fallen Order game, you don't get an actual boss fight with Darth Vader! You have to escape him because he's that powerful and intimidating!

Not only is Darth Vader such a terrifying and awesome villain, but he's also got one of the saddest and most gut-punching fall from graces ever put to film. He's been groomed all his life to be some kind of Chosen One, yet is also met with distrust and hesitation from the Jedi Council, is deeply in love with Padme despite it being forbidden, has trouble sleeping and to top it all off, he loses his mother, loses several friends during the Clone Wars, his Padawan departs from the Jedi Temple due to how unfairly she was treated, he ends up killing his own wife in a fit of rage and ends up dismembered and burnt alive! Geez, no wonder this guy went full on villain after all that. It's so sad to see this promising Jedi Warrior become this dark suited figure that has nothing left in life for him other than to serve his emperor and carry out the will of the Empire. And yet seeing he has something left from his old life with his Padawan turning out to be alive and his children he thought he lost along with Padme are also alive too, it inspires a change in him that lets him die a hero when he turns on the Emperor and throws him to his death (until The Rise of Skywalker ruined all that...) Darth Vader stands as an example of how it's never too late for redemption. It's easy to argue that maybe he didn't deserve it in the end, but I see it as inspiring myself. If even he can be redeemed, than anybody can...

Big Jack Horner

Eh...maybe not. ^^;

Dark, menacing, powerful, sympathetic and iconic, Darth Vader is a character that I'll cherish forever. The Force was very strong with this character, that much is certain...

7: Alastor from Hazbin Hotel

Alastor

Just about everybody loves this guy and has him as their favourite Hazbin Hotel character. I'm no exception to this.

Alastor was an absolute hoot from beginning to end throughout the show and anytime he was onscreen, the show just got extra enjoyable for me. I described him in my review as a walking enigma, and that's because he really is one. He's got a lot of mystery to him that only makes him more intriguing, namely why did he disappear for seven years, why he thinks no one needs to know about it and most importantly, who's leash is he on and what deal did he make that he's currently seeking to find a loophole for in order to get out of? With Season 2 coming in October, I'm sure we may get some of those answers soon, or at least in another future season.

It's not just the mystery around him that makes me love the guy though. Everything about him is just top notch from his striking design, his staticky radio like voice, his sleazy, darkly charismatic personality and how he has that much of a threatening presence that even Vox of the Vees feels threatened by him. Alastor is a show-stealer to the point where he effortlessly takes over Vox's musical number and is able to match wits with even Lucifer himself in the "Hell's Greatest Dad" musical number and whenever the hotel has to deal with a threat, he brings it to a close in literal seconds and comes off as barely even trying when he does so. It's like to him, taking care of his enemies is just a quick and easy chore to carry out rather than an actual fight for his life. While I criticized him very stupidly fighting Adam with no angel killing weapons to use against him, I guess at the same time it is pretty admirable of him to go up against Adam without that advantage and actually toy around with him to the point he forced Adam to get serious. I guarantee if Alastor had brought angel killing weapons, Adam would've been dead at his hands, plain and simple. That alone should give an example how dangerous Alastor is. He is the guy who reduced Husk from a gambling king to a lowly bartender after all. Top it all off with a big personality, a lot of funny dialogue and some killer musical numbers, it's so easy to see why Alastor is such a fan favourite.

With Season 2 coming later this year, I can't wait to see him again. Alastor is an intriguingly mysterious character who owns the screen (ironic as he's a radio demon, not a TV demon) and leaves a big impact whenever he's around. It was a pleasure to meet him, quite a pleasure!

8: Megatron from Transformers: Prime

Megatron

You've seen me talk about this guy plenty in previous posts, namely my favourite villains list and my full-on review of Transformers: Prime earlier this year, so you should be well aware that I like this guy by now.

This is by far my favourite incarnation of Megatron we've had throughout the Transformers franchise and as far as I'm concerned, no Megatron will ever top this version. As such, he's earned his place on the list as among my favourite characters of all time. This Megatron is everything Megatron should be to me: he's got a cool, menacing design, an intimidating voice courtesy of the voice-acting god himself Frank Welker, he has an interesting backstory as a gladiator-turned-revolutionist and a former friend of Optimus Prime's, he's cunning, he's intelligent, he's supremely badass and anytime he shows up, you know things are about to get serious. This is the guy who tosses around the Autobots like ragdolls and gives Optimus a tough time in battle after all.

I really enjoyed this version of Megatron for not only being a menacing villain who's worthy of leading the Decepticons, but for all the other things I mentioned earlier. This Megatron is such a cunning and devious character that he was able to find a way around the restriction on the Forge of Solus Prime so he could use it for himself, he kept Silas around for study instead of just having him killed so he could potentially make use of him another time, he managed to convince an amnesiac Optimus Prime that he was a Decepticon and thus set up the plot of Season 2 with the Iacon Relic hunt and all and he was even able to set up the destruction of the Predacon race with Starscream, Soundwave and Shockwave helping him execute the strategy. The only reason his plans tend to go wrong is due to outside factors beyond his control most of the time. As is, this Megatron is a big threat due to his intelligence and savage might, which we see quite clearly in many of his battles in the show. His battle with Airachnid's Insecticon drone is one such example with him literally ripping its extra limbs off and then decapitating it to finish it off. This is the Megatron that all other Megatrons should look up to in my opinion.

With his savage might combined with his cunning, his interesting past with the Autobots, his attention grabbing presence and his intimidating character, the Prime version of Megatron is not only my favourite Megatron, but my favourite Transformers character in general. All hail Megatron!

9: WALL.E & EVE from WALL.E

WALL.E and EVE

We have a tie here for I can't pick a favourite out of these two. If Tails is my favourite Sonic character, Chip N' Dale are my favourite Disney characters and Alastor is my favourite Hazbin Hotel character, then WALL.E and EVE are my favourite Pixar characters, hence one of the reasons they make the count.

Pixar has created a whole horde of amazing and unforgettable characters, and these two are no exception. WALL.E is insanely adorable thanks to his appealing design and curious, inquisitive nature where he's just endlessly fascinated by the world around him and what humanity has left behind. What's more relatable than that? Heck, WALL.E likes to collect things he comes across, much like us humans and our love of collecting. As well as that, WALL.E is really endearing for his gentle nature to the point where he's willing to take care of a plant he finds and he puts EVE above all else when she goes into statis after she finds his plant. Seriously, he goes into space and is taken along for the ride just to make sure she's safe. What could be a better example of a devoted boyfriend than that? And as if WALL.E couldn't get more awesome, his determined nature has him stand up against even AUTO despite its attempts to stop him and EVE from returning humanity to Earth and he even puts his own life on the line just to make sure he succeeds. That's pretty admirable if you ask me and the biggest reason why I love WALL.E

EVE is equally as lovable too, being the more tough and battle ready of the duo and having a more serious and no-nonsense attitude, but even she can be as adorably curious as WALL.E is, especially when she checks out his collection as he shows it to her. It's like when we have something we're enthusiastic about and want to show everybody what we love, it's really relatable and cute in that regard. EVE is also someone who is deeply devoted to those she cares about. When seeing how much WALL.E cared for her and looked out for her safety, she wanted nothing more than to return the favour to the point she even repaired him after they got back to Earth. If that's not immense gratitude, I don't know what is. Lindy Pepper Bean and Bloo could learn something from this bot! And of course, who doesn't love a lady who can kick ass? Seriously, don't mess with EVE or she'll point that powerful arm cannon your way!

Both characters are incredibly adorable and endearing, and also a great romantic couple with their contrasting personalities, their development, their devotion to one another and how they manage to be insanely appealing characters despite having pretty minimal dialogue throughout the movie. WALL.E and EVE are two very well constructed machines if you ask me...

10: Simba from The Lion King

Simba

If I had to pick a favourite Disney character from their movies, I'd go with this guy, hands down. The Lion King is my favourite movie after all, so it'd be weird if a character from that movie didn't make the list.

I've often said that Simba has one of the best written and most complete character arcs in all of cinema, and I mean that. Everything about him and how his story plays out is just perfection from how he starts as a young, mischievous, hot-headed and playful cub who endears great tragedy as he watches Mufasa get trampled to death by wildebeest in front of his eyes, and all while being mislead to believe it was his fault no less(!) to a laidback guy who wants to forget his past and just enjoy life in the moment to finally a responsible leader who accepts his place in the Circle of Life and takes his position as king. I literally cannot think of any way his story could've been told any better than how it was here. He's just such a well-written character. Even in The Lion King II, he's pretty well-handled there with his justifiable paranoia over the outsiders and how he just wants to keep his daughter Kiara protected while also having to learn that he shouldn't give into his own bigotry. Over the course of both movies, he really did have fantastic development that shows how far he's come.

Simba is one of the reasons why The Lion King is my favourite movie of all time. Not only was his development so beautifully crafted and executed, but he's also just a likeable character in general. He has a fun personality as a cub where he's just full of life and can't wait to be king, but he also doesn't want to disappoint his father and will show great shame if he feels he's screwed up. How many of us have felt like that with our own parents? As an adult, he becomes incredibly sympathetic as he's troubled by the loss of his father and just as he's beginning to enjoy his new life away from the Pride Lands, suddenly the past catches up to him and he has to deal with the daunting task of going back to confront it. It's a very real situation that many of us fear to end up in. Do we confront our pasts and try to overcome our past tragedies or do we run away from them and make a better life for ourselves? All that made for compelling viewing and why Simba is such a strong, relatable and sympathetic character. And in the end, he does the right thing with some coaching from Rafiki and goes back, confronts his past, overthrows Scar and takes his rightful place as King of the Pride Lands. He well and truly earned that title by the end of the movies, no question about it.

Well-written, compelling, relatable, sympathetic, enjoyable, those are just a few words that describe Simba. He's a king that I'll happily follow any day...

And that concludes my 10 Favourite Characters list. I hope you enjoyed it and I invite you all to share your thoughts down below. Do you like these characters too? What are YOUR 10 favourite characters in media? Do let me know. ^^

Next week I'll be doing an essay where I talk about why King Magnifico from Wish is NOT a good guy. See you then media fans!
