10 Characters That I Dislike

Special thanks to R.M.WriterArtist who's support on Patreon got him this post.
We live in a world where we live by two things: we either like something or we dislike something. In this case, I'm sadly going for the latter. As much as I don't like being negative and much prefer making posts about things that I love, this Patreon request asked me to talk about something I don't love for a change. Well, at least I'm getting paid for this, so that should make it less unbearable for me. (shrugs)
When it comes to fictional media, you have characters you love and characters you despise. This list will be me talking about 10 characters I absolutely cannot stand in the medias I've consumed throughout my life. These are characters I dislike for many reasons, namely being insufferable arseholes who make my blood boil whenever they show up, badly written characters who are let down by the story they're in or characters who end up being the biggest monsters you've ever seen in your life, and yet somehow you're meant to like them.
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: Some characters on this list might be ones you really like. So if you can't handle an opinion that is different from yours, then read another post.
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER NUMBER TWO: Do NOT think this post is an attack on you or anyone who likes these characters. I am in no way intending to shame or attack anyone for liking these characters. If you like them, that's great! More power to you. For me, I just can't stand these characters and I'm going to explain why that is.
Without further ado, let's just get this other with...
1: Bart Simpson from The Simpsons

I'll never understand how or why anyone likes this little s***.
Bart Simpson is the one fictional character I despise more than any other. Why is that? He's a delinquent who is an underachiever and proud of it, he's always driving his family crazy with his pranks and ill-behaviour and there are times he can be pretty damn evil. How many times has he pulled pranks and people and taken great delight in their misery for example? The fact he doesn't seem to have any problems with the way he treats Homer and Lisa doesn't exactly endear him to me. Some will say "Well Homer's no better, he's always strangling Bart!" Yeah, because Bart provokes him and genuinely seems to enjoy making him mad! Obviously, I'm not defending Homer since yeah, strangling a kid is child abuse and a terrible way to raise a kid, but I'm just saying Bart ain't innocent either. Oh and let's not forget how a lot of the times he pulls off pranks that could've potentially KILLED people over the course of the series. Need I remind you he almost got Mayor Quimby killed with that electric chair stunt in one episode? Or how he messed around with the school's steam tunnels and did a lot of damage to the school as a result? And before anyone says anything, no, I don't care if he's acted regretful for those things. He should have the common sense not to do anything that stupid and dangerous in the first place!
Which brings me to something else that drives me nuts with this guy: his fans. For whatever reason, they ALWAYS look the other way whenever Bart does something terrible or even worse, try to make excuses for him while demonizing the other characters. I can't tell you enough how many times I've heard that terrible "Lisa is worse!" excuse. If you're going to defend your favourite character, don't use that excuse. It's terrible logic and doesn't actually refute anyone's points. Besides, in what way is Lisa worse than Bart? At least Lisa has admirable traits and is someone who we should be listening to as she has the right idea on how to save the world and take care of the environment. Bart has none of those, and any attempts at giving him admirable traits just don't work because of how inconsistent his character is. Sometimes he shows signs of having a heart, sometimes he's completely heartless. In any case, his fans give me an extra reason to despise him because of how hypocritical they can be.
And due to the nature of the show, he NEVER learns his lesson or ever grows up and matures as a character. He's the same delinquent that he's always been since Day 1 and any lesson he learns is immediately forgotten about afterwards because this is a show where characters don't develop, grow up or mature. So my dislike of Bart comes from what a lost cause he is. Even HIS OWN MOTHER lampshades what a lost cause he is by mentioning how she punishes and punishes him but it never sinks in! How can I possibly like this guy if he's never going to improve, never going to learn his lesson and never going to mature? And as anyone can tell you, Bart falls into the same pit all other Simpsons characters have fallen into where his negative traits are ramped up and he's even worse than he already was. And then there's the fact he'll often do terrible things and either get away with it, or the episode will paint him as being in the right to do so and demonize anyone who criticizes him for what he did. And all this is why I can't stand this twerp and why anytime he's onscreen, I just want him to disappear. If he didn't exist and the show was all about Lisa, then I might actually enjoy it for once.
Ill-behaved, cruel, an absolute nightmare of a child and a protagonist nobody can root for because of how unlikeable he is and how much of a lost cause he is, Bart Simpson is a kid I never want to see again...
2: Perfect Peter from Horrid Henry

I swear this list isn't just me hating on child characters. I'm NOT a child hater! Honest!
But much like Bart, Peter is another character who grinds my gears and I'm always happy to see him get his comeuppance in the end. You may wonder "If you hate Bart for being a naughty boy, then why do you hate Peter? He's nowhere near as bad as Bart is!" I'd argue that he actually is, and all for one reason:
HE'S NOT PERFECT.
Contrary to his name, Peter's actually pretty awful when you knuckle down to it and analyse the character and his actions throughout the Horrid Henry books and TV series. First of all, his "perfect" behaviour comes across as an act to me. He only ACTS perfect, but in actuality he's just as, if not more horrid then Henry is. Such examples I can give include the very first Horrid Henry story where he gets jealous of Henry being perfect and tries throwing his food at him despite Henry doing nothing wrong, sabotaging Henry's talent show act out of spite because Henry rightfully didn't credit him for being his assistant (it's a magic trick so Henry wants to keep up the illusion of it being magic), trying to sabotage Henry's attempts to be good so he can't go to the fair, deciding to be naughty just so he can get some attention, trying to get revenge on Henry for being mean to him, wilfully lying in front of everyone when telling his side of the story so he can paint himself as the hero of a situation involving the head teacher's pet kitten and so much more. It's so funny how Henry's supposed to be the "horrid" one, yet his brother feels like he's more horrid by comparison.
His hypocrisy especially makes him completely insufferable. He's always complaining when Henry's being horrid and yet the one time Henry stops being horrid and tries being good, he's not happy and even gets jealous of him! It's even worse in the animated version because he actually tries to sabotage his efforts! OUT OF SPITE no less! Seriously, what's wrong with you you stupid child? Do you want Henry to stop being horrid or not?! And then he'll say things like "I want doesn't get", yet he'll use the phrase "I want" anyway. Talk about not practicing what you preach. He really is a walking contradiction half the time and you just have to wonder what it'd take to make him happy.
Every time I read the books or watch the show, I'm always rooting for Henry, because Peter is just a detestable little prick. I'm just glad that my two brothers are nothing like him. Manipulative, pretentious, hypocritical and spiteful, this boy is anything BUT perfect...
3: Claudia from The Dragon Prince

I've talked about this character many, many, MANY times in previous posts, so I won't bore you with the details.
I'll just give a recap on why I don't like Claudia at all:
She had potential, but just became a lost cause that makes even Aaravos look more heroic by comparison due to how she can't clearly see how evil her dad is, or worse doesn't even care and just keeps making excuse for him, she's inconsistent with how she's portrayed given she's either a menacing villain or a complete goofball and neither side works because of how inconsistent she is, she's hypocritical to an obnoxious degree and the story keeps trying to make her look sympathetic despite there being no chance that we can ever feel sorry for her.
All of this is why Claudia is the most aggravating thing to come out of The Dragon Prince. The fact she gets away with her crimes in the end doesn't help her any. I really wish the writers let Rayla slice her to pieces in the final season. THAT would've been so satisfying...
4: SpongeBob SquarePants from SpongeBob SquarePants

If there's any character I'll never understand the popularity of, it's this guy. I'm genuinely curious how anyone ever liked this guy and how he ever became popular in the first place.
HE IS SO ANNOYING!!!
No joke, if I ranked these characters by how much they irritate me, SpongeBob would be Number 1. As is, he is a pop-culture icon and has a lot of fans, so I'll just say that I have nothing against you guys or anything like that. I just don't like SpongeBob, like at all. I despise everything about him from his stupid design, his unsettling faces, his annoying laugh and his obnoxious tendencies to cry like a baby over everything, overreact to whatever situation he's in or the fact he's such an oblivious idiot that you have to wonder how he even functions as a sentient being. No joke, it's unreal how many times SpongeBob reacts to something with complete and utter stupidity or just can't take the hint whenever reality tries to slap him in the face. I mean which part of "Squidward doesn't like him" does he NOT understand? He does that a lot where characters will say they despise him, yet he keeps trying to befriend them anyway and won't leave them alone despite what they tell him. I absolutely can't stand people like this in real life, so it's little wonder this cube-shaped b*****d drives me up the wall the way he does.
But what makes him even worse is the fact he's one of those horrible characters where they do a lot of things wrong, yet they're meant to be seen as the hero of their series and we're supposed to be rooting for them. Sorry guys, but I'm NOT going to root for an oblivious idiot who won't leave people alone and seems to gleefully torment them just for wanting them to leave him alone. He's also pretty awful in other ways too, namely that one time when he tried to sabotage Squidward so he couldn't win the Employee of the Month award or how he got jealous of Squidward when he became popular and kicked him out of his own celebration party. Yeah, I'm totally going to root for a character who acts like a spoiled brat and constantly causes pain and suffering for people who just want him to go away (sarcasm). Protagonist Centred Morality is one of the worst tropes a story can use and SpongeBob is one of the worst examples of this if you ask me.
Annoying as hell, impossible to root for and obnoxious to a ridiculous degree, this one creature I hope never to encounter if I go under the sea...
5: Lindy Pepper-Bean from Doctor Who

I can relax with this entry, because at least I know I won't upset anybody here. After all, NOBODY likes Lindy Pepper-Bean.
Of all the characters ever to come out of Doctor Who, Lindy Pepper-Bean is the worst one, bar none. Not only does she come from the worst episode ever written for the show, Dot and Bubble, but this character single-handedly ruins the whole viewing experience and is the reason why it's so terrible. She lives in an absolute brain-dead society where everyone is way too dependent on their stupid dot and bubbles to the point they need to be directed by them or even be able to use the toilet with them so she's already unlikeable from how much cringe she and the society she lives in bring to the screen. Seriously Russell T. Davies, you shouldn't be making us want to root for the aliens to kill these people in your stories! But it gets even worse where Lindy is not only absolute cringe, she's also the biggest b**ch you'll ever see in your life.
First of all, she's racist. That automatically makes her someone I want to see die horribly at the hands of an alien or monster. Racist people are the worst and Lindy's no exception. Second of all, she gets a guy named Ricky September killed in order to save her own skin, despite the fact Ricky is the reason she's even alive by the end so yeah, nice to know she's incapable of gratitude as well! And finally, despite her crimes and her negative traits, she doesn't get any kind of comeuppance for it. She gets to live in the end and gets away scot free with her bigotry. Like any racist, she's bigoted to the point of stupidity where she'd rather take her chances in the wilderness than go with a black man, even though said black man is the reason SHE'S EVEN ALIVE BY THE END!!! I don't care how racist you are, you shouldn't give a crap about someone's skin colour if they save your life in the end! Then again, why do I expect racist assholes like Lindy to have any common sense? If they had common sense, they wouldn't be racist in the first place!
And that's why I despise this crime against nature so much. She's cringeworthy, she's ungrateful, she's racist and she doesn't get any comeuppance in the end. At least fans like me can have some hope that she dies a horrible death out in the wilderness. My personal head canon is that the Daleks invade FineTime and kill everybody there, including her. Nobody can tell me otherwise! =P
6: Bede from Pokémon Sword and Shield

I've also talked about this character and why I don't like him in previous posts, but I'll go in a little more detail here as it's the first time talking about him directly.
Bede is a character I don't like not just for his unlikeable behaviour and arrogant personality, but the fact that his presence harms the story of Sword and Shield. Before we get to that, let's talk about Bede as a character. Again, he's the kind of guy where you just want to punch him in the fact for his smug attitude. He acts all high and mighty just because Chairman Rose endorsed him, yet his skills as a Pokémon trainer make him laughable. He uses a team of mostly Psychic types, which means anyone with a Bug or Dark-type team of Pokémon can take him down with incredible ease and whenever he loses, he either acts like he only "let" us win or he'll demand a do-over. That's pretty pathetic if you ask me. And then there's the fact he rightfully gets disqualified from the Gym Challenge due to damaging a historical monument, but that punishment is immediately undermined by Opal deciding to take him in and make him the next Gym Leader, and all because...he wears pink. I think Opal's gotten senile in her old age, cause anyone with common sense can tell you this jerk isn't Gym Leader material. So yeah, good to know his punishment instead got him rewarded, even if he might not see it as an award with how he doesn't like the way Opal makes him dress and all but still. And then there's the fact by the end of the game, he's still an arsehole. He doesn't learn anything or get any character development. He's like Kaiba in how he goes from jerk to slightly less of a jerk. That's not character development writers. Either make him stop being a jerk completely or don't bother trying to develop him at all.
And then there's the other thing I mentioned, the fact his presence is a black mark on Sword and Shield's story. For whatever reason, Game Freak decided we needed a third rival character when we already have Hop and Marnie for that and as a result, Bede takes away valuable screen time that should've been going to them instead. Marnie especially got the short end of the stick because of this guy. Unlike Bede, I was way more invested in her story and struggles and wanted more of her. But no, we have to make room for Bede because...players wanted more jerk rivals I guess, I don't know. You know you're a bad character when your very presence harms the story and takes away from other characters that should be getting focused on instead. And there's the fact I already mentioned that the game doesn't give him any character development or how his punishment was turned into an award so he gets to shirk any chance at development, all of which further hurt the game's story for me.
If there's ever a character who doesn't deserve to carry a Pokéball, it's this guy. Smug, arrogant, unwilling to improve as a person, gets his punishment turned into an award instead and his very presence causes more problems than it solves for the game's story. Every time I play Sword and Shield, I'm always happy to kick this guy's ass, and I make it super-effective too!
7: Namaari from Raya and the Last Dragon

I talked about her once before in my worst villains list last year, so go look at that if you want the full details.
For this list, I'll summarize:
She's the kind of villain who's painted as being in the right despite evidence to the contrary, she never once sees what she's doing is wrong and has no remorse for her actions, does stupid things that only makes things worse for our heroes and is somehow meant to be sympathetic. Also she gets an unearned redemption in the end. Yippee, gotta love those, haven't we? =P
Disney should be ashamed of themselves for creating such a despicable character. She's unworthy of being in the clan of Disney Villains and her very presence is responsible for the biggest issues with Raya and the Last Dragon's terrible story and botched message about trust. I wouldn't trust this girl with my life! Namaari deserves to be petrified by the Druun for all she's done...
8: Bloo and Cheese from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends
We have a legitimate tie here for two characters from the show, and that's because I dislike them both for the same reasons: they're insufferably annoying and make me want to switch the channel and watch something else because of how much they drive me nuts.
It's a funny case here for they're characters I hate for the same reason, but they both have different reasons why they're annoying as hell and make me detest them as much as I do.
Let's start with Bloo. He's in the same camp as Bart and SpongeBob in where he's one of our protagonists and is the guy we're supposed to be rooting for, yet I question how anyone can root for this jerk. 90% of the time, he's constantly being the biggest arsehole known to man by treating his supposed "friends" like trash, including Mac, the very guy who imagined him no less! Mac's literally the reason Bloo exists in the first place, and yet he's constantly treating him like crap and somehow has the gall to still call himself "Mac's best friend". If my best friend treated me the same way Bloo treats Mac, I'd have ditched them after a single day, let me tell you. It's especially egregious the way he acts because Foster's gave him a home and Madame Foster was willing to bend the rules if it means stopping Bloo from getting adopted, and he still acts like a dick to everybody! Lindy Pepper-Bean is looking at this twerp and saying "Talk about lack of gratitude!" And given the nature of this show, Bloo's the same kind of annoying character that Bart and SpongeBob are: the kind that never learn their lessons, never improve and continue to be jerks over and over and over again. How is anyone meant to root for this guy when he's constantly being a jerk to everyone and never learning his lesson? That's not a character I want to follow and enjoy adventures with, this is someone I wouldn't want to be within five millimetres of! I am aware that Bloo does have the occasional redeeming trait here and there, but so did Bart and that didn't stop me from hating his guts. An occasional redeeming trait doesn't stop a character from being unlikeable and in Bloo's case, the bad outweighs the good here.
But I'll give Bloo credit, he's nowhere near as insufferable as Cheese is. Cheese is probably the only character on this list I'd say I dislike as much as Bart because of how irritating he is. He's always screaming at the top of his voice, he's always being a nuisance to everybody to the point that even Wilt can't stand him, he whines like a baby when he doesn't get what he wants...and the show expects us to like him for some reason. Sorry writers, but if even the characters themselves can't stand Cheese, than how can we, the audience, find him endearing? He's also like SpongeBob in that he can't get the hint that nobody likes him and just wants him to go away, and so he keeps showing up and driving everybody crazy. And yet in spite of that, he often wins in the end and gets away with being a pest without consequence! Yay, dumb idiots who don't get punished for their terrible behaviour, my favourite. (sarcasm) But what makes me despise him more than anything else is how he's written. I dunno if anybody else got the same vibes I did, but Cheese comes off as a caricature of an autistic person, but done in the most obnoxious way. Seriously, he displays a lot of negative traits of autism like repetitive phrases, screaming and whining when they don't get what they want, not getting social cues etc. As an autistic person myself, he offends me in that regard. If Cheese is meant to be autistic, then screw the writers for giving autistic folk like me a bad image. I assure you readers, not all autistic people are as annoying as he is! If he isn't meant to be autistic, then I take that back. Still doesn't stop him being annoying as hell though.
If Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends was a real place, I'd visit it...provided these two numbskulls aren't living there as well. These two are imaginary friends who do not deserve to be adopted whatsoever...
9: Reva Sevander from Star Wars

Yet another villain who I put on my worst villains list last year, and I've also talked extensively about her in my review of Obi-Wan Kenobi, so I won't bother repeating myself too much with this one. Check those posts for further details.
For this list, I'll summarise again:
Reva is a character I don't like because of how she's impossible to take seriously as a villain, constantly acts all tough and mighty but is all talk and no show, is massively hypocritical for hating Darth Vader and yet decides to join the Empire, has no qualms on dismembering innocent civilians, keeps surviving being stabbed by a lightsaber when that should actually kill somebody and just like with Namaari, she gets an unearned redemption in the end because some idiot thought making her sympathetic would work out for her. It didn't, it made the character inconsistent and impossible to like.
This is a character who should never have been created. She's one of the worst things to come out of Star Wars and I hope Darth Vader gets to kill her for real some day soon. Please make it happen Disney...
10: Lila Rossi from Miraculous Ladybug

Honestly, a good chunk of the cast from Miraculous Ladybug are characters that grind my gears from Chloe Bourgeious being a lost cause to Marinette being pretty unheroic and bordering on Mary-Sue levels half the time, Adrien being an entitled brat and also too much of a wet blanket concerning his father, Hawk Moth being the worst example of trying to make a villain more complex and sympathetic imaginable and many, many more. But of all the characters in this show, I say Lila is the one I dislike the most.
Now to be fair, she IS meant to be hateable, so that puts her below most of the other characters on this list since they were characters we were somehow meant to like despite how insufferable they are. At least they're not pretending Lila's the hero we're meant to be rooting for is what I'm saying. But what makes Lila such a detestable character isn't how unlikeable she is. Again, she's MEANT to be unlikeable. No, it's the fact her presence in the story causes everybody to lose several braincells and become complete morons just so she can seem like some kind of intelligent schemer. Lila is not intelligent or cunning, she's the kind of badly written character where she only succeeds because the plot makes everybody dumb for her benefit. It's like how Roy only wins battles in Pokémon Horizons because the plot nerfs his opponents for his benefit, except not as annoying since Roy is at least a character people can like and root and the bad writing only effects him when he's in a Pokémon battle. Lila is a detestable gremlin that we want to see get her comeuppance in the end, yet she never does because everybody in this show is TOO STUPID!
And don't get me started on how anytime Lila suffers some kinda of setback, it barely slows her down and she comes back stronger than ever to the point where she's now the new Hawk Moth and the new antagonist of the show. Lovely, the lying b**ch who makes everybody around her dumber than a sack of potatoes is the new villain now. I'm so impressed (sarcasm). So not only does Lila make the writing of this show worse just by existing, but we can't get the pleasure of seeing her get any comeuppance for her actions because she just comes back and has benefited from Gabriel's wish in the end. Heck, in her first episode, Lila's painted as a victim and Marinette is seen as wrong for exposing her for being a liar...for some reason. Don't ask me why, this show has no moral compass. It also doesn't help how the show tries to make us think she's this scheming opportunist who can manipulate others, yet anyone with a brain would've foiled her lies within seconds, she barely appears half the time and anytime she does show up, she's not really all that competent.
All this and more is why Lila is the worst character to come out of Miraculous Ladybug and the one who made it on this list...and that's no lie! XD
(heavy sigh of relief)
And that's my list of 10 characters I dislike. I hope you enjoyed it more than I did, because this was NOT fun! If you like these characters, then that's cool, I have no problem with that. I just don't like them and I hope I explained myself well enough for you all to understand. If I upset any of you with what I've said here, I'm very sorry and I just want to make it clear that it's not my attention to upset anybody with my opinions here. I've listed ten characters I don't like and explained why I don't like them, and I hope nobody will have a problem with that...
Next week I will be counting down my Top 10 Favourite Pokémon Elite Four Members. See you then media fans!
(Dis)honourable Mentions
Scourge the Hedgehog from Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog
Hamlin from Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog
Damian Wayne from the DC Universe
Amanda Waller from the DC Universe
Marinette Dupain-Cheng/Ladybug from Miraculous Ladybug (show version, I like the movie version)
Gabriel Agreste/Hawk Moth from Miraculous Ladybug (show version again)
Gus from Robotboy
Lil' Gideon from Gravity Falls
Great revisiting of hate top 10 hate characters in media... I agree Bart Simpson is nothing but disrespectful trouble marker while Claudia isn't much better either apart being a b***.
So happy Scourge was mentionable hate that green skinny hog......Hamlin is scumbag of the franchise it would be fun seeing him turn intro bacon bits with something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnrB9Bi17rI XD
Some characters I can't comment on since I didn't watch the shows or at least not for long enough.
I can admit that Bart and Spongebob have become annoying. I liked them in the early days before stagnation, longtime status quo and flanderization set in but I can't now.
Bloo was decent in the first three episodes pilot but after that he went downhill faster compared to the others and I always wondered why Cheese even existed to begin with.
Bede was an awful rival, and unlike Blue or Silver he didn't have an arc where he turned his life around in a meaningful way. And hence in my stories I have Bede be serving community service under Opal and…
I totally agree with you on Perfect Peter, dude. Goddamn that kid!
Good roster you made. Well bad as I can agree those characters are just bad and horribly written.
My roster of characters I dislike would be:
*Karim (Dragon Prince)
*Cinder Fall & General Ironwood (RWBY)
*Duncan & Courtney (Total Drama) (others I would also say Dave, Sierra, Chase, Emma (from TDI Reboot) & Ripper)
*Hans (Frozen)
*Odalia Blight & Bosha (The Owl House)
*Chloe (Miraculous Ladybug) (Sorry but she is a lost cause at this point in the show. Movie version could surprise me.)
*Simon Krieger (Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales)
*Geoffery St. John (Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog)
*Topsy (Land Before Time series)
*Mertle Edmonds (Lilo & Stitch)
Ooooooookay. I’ll make sure to ask you to do a top 10 favourite characters list XD
These were interesting reads, and I do remember you explaining your hatred for Bart years ago but it was a nice refresher. Perfect Peter I know you hated him as well, but again it felt nice to refresh myself with why you hate him XD
Oh Bloo got on my nerves like you.
I will say in regards to Adrien being entitled they’ve apparently cut that back a lot, so that’s at least something and he’s the character you feel sorry for the most now that everybody is lying to him.
Claudia could have worked if they committed to her being a…
